Inscriptions may sometimes include pictorial elements, heraldic or otherwise. Decorative carvings may be incised into the stone, or carved in low relief. Low relief carving can be achieved by lowering the stone around the carving or by lowering the whole surface of the stone leaving the carving standing proud.
