An early love of lettering led me to study typography and letterforms at the University of Reading and since 1984 I have been designing and carving inscriptions in stone, slate and wood. For many years I collaborated with Ian Hamilton Finlay, contributing works to international exhibitions, private collections and to his garden, Stonypath. I have designed medals for the Royal Mint and teach lettering at the University of Reading as a visiting lecturer. Apart from a spell working with a lettercarver in the USA and as assistant to book designer Humphrey Stone, I have always worked for myself. I work almost entirely to commission from my workshop and studio at my home in Wiltshire where I live with my husband, a member of The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and my young family. I am an elected member of The Art Workers Guild and Letter Exchange.
